About Alex Valencia, LCPC

Alex ValenciaI’m your child counselor and I’m dedicated to helping your child achieve their full potential…

Does it seem like your child has big reactions to almost everything these days? If it feels like you are losing control as a parent and are at a loss of what to do next, I can help. I am committed to helping you and your child learn tools to manage these big feelings while identifying their needs and utilizing their strengths.

Prior to entering the counseling field, I worked with children from 2 – 12 years old in the school setting as a teacher and a literacy interventionist. I also spent time conducting individual interventions for children with Autism and developmental disabilities using the “floortime”, child-led approach. My experience working with children of various ages and backgrounds has shown me how many are in need of support, and would thrive given a little extra help.

I am excited about the opportunity to become a new member of you and your child’s support system as we work through challenges and celebrate milestones together.

My experience includes…

…A Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling with an emphasis on children and adolescents from Northwestern University.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the state of Maryland and have experience working with children, tweens, and families.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other expressive therapies to create a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship with my clients. Using a person-centered approach, I honor the role creativity plays in counseling and believe art can be a great way for children of all ages to effectively express their emotions, fears, strengths, and insecurities. I am currently pursuing advanced training in play therapy and I am excited to learn new tools as I continue to grow as a counselor.

…aside from being a child counselor, my passion is my family. My favorite thing to do is spending time with my husband, my baby boy, and my dog, along with many other family members.

I am an enthusiastic DC sports fan and you can often find me cheering on the Washington Commanders and Washington Capitals. I also enjoy expressing myself creatively whether it is through drawing, painting, or cooking.
