Grief is A Journey We All Face

Grief does not keep to a schedule. Plenty of people are back at work and functioning on the outside months after a death, and only then notice they are not okay. If that is where you are, this page is for you.

Whether you are coping with the loss of a parent, a partner, a child or a friend, the loss of a beloved pet, a loss that is still coming, or a major life transition, we are here to support you. Grief can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to face it alone. We meet with you one-on-one, in person at our North Bethesda office next to Pike & Rose, with free parking in front, or by video from anywhere in Maryland.

Sessions are one-on-one, in person, in a private office, with the same therapist each time. You decide what to talk about and how fast, and nothing you bring is too small. We recognize that grief affects everyone differently, and our approach is tailored to meet your unique needs and circumstances. We work with children, teens and adults, and every clinician at Tender Hearts works with grief, so you are matched with the therapist who fits you best.

What to Expect from Grief Counseling

  • Emotional Support: Share your feelings and experiences in a confidential, judgment-free environment.
  • No Script, No Timeline: We start wherever you are, including the feelings you have not said out loud, like relief after a long illness and the guilt that follows it.
  • Coping Strategies: Discover tools and techniques to manage difficult emotions and reduce stress.
  • Honoring and Remembering: Find meaningful ways to honor your loss while moving forward in your life.
  • Resilience Building: Develop inner strength and a renewed sense of purpose as you adjust to life after loss.

Meet Our Grief Counselor

Every therapist at Tender Hearts Counseling supports clients through grief, and Olivia Seiceanu, LCPC, is our grief specialist, with focused training in grief and bereavement counseling. We see children, teens and adults in person at our North Bethesda office and by video throughout Maryland, and we match you with the therapist who fits your situation.

Grief counseling can help after the death of a parent, a partner or spouse, a child, a sibling or a friend; after a miscarriage or pregnancy loss; while a loved one is seriously ill; after the death of a pet; and after the end of a marriage or a career. It helps whether the loss was last week or years ago. It’s a resource for navigating the pain and uncertainty that come with loss, helping you to move forward with understanding and resilience.

Grief in Children and Teens

Kids and teens often grieve sideways: a drop in grades, anger at the wrong person, a stomachache every school morning, or nothing visible at all until months later. Our child therapists work with grief regularly, using play and conversation suited to the child’s age, and our grief specialist sees teens as well. We match your child with the right therapist, and parents are part of the plan.

Pet Loss Counseling

Losing an animal is real grief. The house is too quiet, the routine is gone, and too many people expect you to be over it quickly. You will not hear “just a pet” here. Whether you lost a dog, a cat, a horse, a service animal or any animal you loved, we offer in-person pet loss counseling for children, teens and adults.

Many people carry guilt after euthanasia or an accident: was it too soon, was it too late, did they know. After an accident, the what-ifs can be relentless. You can bring all of it here, including the parts you have not said to anyone. If your animal is old or seriously ill, you may already be grieving, and you do not have to wait for the loss to come in.

Start your journey today.

Tell us in a few lines what you lost and when. Request a free, confidential call to match you, or your child, with the right therapist, in person at our office. One line is enough; you do not have to explain everything yet. We offer weekday evening and limited Saturday appointments, and same-week appointments are usually available.

The form is the fastest way to reach us. We answer every inquiry, 7 days a week.

Grief Counseling FAQ

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Yes. Nearly all of our clients come to our office at 6010 Executive Blvd, Suite 503, North Bethesda, next to Pike & Rose, with free parking in front. Video sessions are available anywhere in Maryland, if you prefer.

How soon can I be seen?

Same-week appointments are usually available, including evenings and limited Saturdays. We answer inquiries 7 days a week.

Do I have to talk about everything right away?

No. You set the pace. Many people spend the first session on the practical side of what happened, or on how this week has been, and come to the hardest parts later. Your therapist will not push you to tell the whole story before you are ready, and one line in the form is enough to get started.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. What you share with your therapist is confidential. We do not discuss your care with anyone without your written permission, apart from the narrow situations where the law requires it, which your therapist will explain at your first appointment.

Do you accept insurance?

We are “out of network” providers, which means we do not directly take insurance. We collect payment at the time of service and provide you with a statement of services that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many of our clients have a substantial portion of their services reimbursed, and most use their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Please contact your insurer for details on reimbursement procedures and the types of services covered. The codes we use are 90791 for intake appointments and 90837 or 90847 for follow-up appointments.

What are your fees?

Our appointments range between $180 and $260 per 55-minute session. There is a one-time intake fee of $60. Please contact the office at hello@tenderheartscounseling.com for more information on fees and services.
