Exploration of Rhythmic Activities

Rhythmic Activity

Rhythmic motion toys such as this bubbler may be an option

Rhythmic activities and tools can help calm your upset child’s mind and body to help them process the world around them at a time of distress.  Some helpful strategies you can use with your child include:

  • Rocking chairs
  • Pencil rolls
  • Rolling a ball
  • Slinky toys
  • Yo-yo toys
  • Playground and porch swings
  • Hammocks
  • Rhythmic Fidget Toys

Allison Brown discusses some of these in the following video:

Why do rhythmic activities work?

While these may appear quite simple and not not complex they can be very helpful for a number of reasons.  A rhythmic activity:

  1. Regulates the Nervous System: Engaging in rhythmic movement or activities can help regulate the nervous system. It shifts the focus away from stressors and toward the repetition of the activity, which can naturally lower stress levels and promote a state of calm.
  2. Enhances Focus and Mindfulness: Rhythmic activities require a level of concentration and presence, which can help children practice mindfulness. By focusing on the rhythm and the movements, children can anchor themselves in the present moment, reducing feelings of overwhelm.
  3. Facilitates Emotional Expression: These activities can also serve as an outlet for emotional expression. Children who may struggle to articulate their feelings can find rhythm and movement a more accessible way to express and process complex emotions.
  4. Strengthens the Parent-Child Bond: Participating in rhythmic activities together can strengthen the bond between parent and child. This shared experience not only offers emotional support but also reinforces the child’s sense of being understood and cared for.
  5. Builds Coping Skills: Over time, rhythmic activities can teach children effective coping mechanisms for dealing with distress. They learn that they have the tools and abilities to soothe themselves, fostering resilience and emotional independence.
